The Desert is Alive! 10+ years old  July 8th-12th 1:00pm to 4:30 pm*  $150

We’ll look at key science points related to our delicate desert ecosystem and the animals that live here. We’ll look at how plants and animals survive the desert heat and the long months without rain and touch on the ecological issues of the Salton Sea. This camp includes a trip to the Bighorn Institute where students will be able to speak with a biologist who works with local Bighorn sheep right here in our desert mountains! The trip will take place on the morning of Thursday July 11th.
PLEASE NOTE: Students will ride in the SMaRT Education van to and from the Bighorn Institute. Students will meet at the Palm Springs Air Museum at 8:00AM and return by 12:00pm. Students must be picked up by 12:00pm on Thursday. This trip is only open to students enrolled in the camp. There will be no afternoon class on the day of the trip. Please consider this before registering for this camp.

Video Game Design 10+ years old  July 22nd-26th 1:00pm to 4:30pm  $150

There is one universal truth in making videos games - making your own game is hard, but the beauty of designing your own game is that each one of us brings our own unique experiences and ideas to game design. We'll take a look at the process of world building and test each other's prototypes starting with a simple platformer game (a genre of games where the primary action is jumping over obstacles - think Super Mario Bros) and moving on from there.

EV3 Robotics 10+ years old June 24th-28th 1:00pm to 4:30pm  $150

This camp is a good place to start for students who are new to robotics, have not used EV3 before, or would like a refresher in EV3. Much like our popular Saturday Workshop series, students will focus on a different area of programing and engineering each day. Students will use a LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Core Set robotics kit to build a robot and learn about the fundamentals of computer programming by making their robot complete various tasks. Students will use the Engineering Design Process to build their own moving attachments using a motor and LEGO Technic pieces.

Our summer camps are a fun, hands-on way to explore the world of
ScienceTechnologyEngineeringArts, and Math

Including Programming, Engineering Concepts, Scientific Exploration, Digital Media, Robotics, and more!
Summer at SciTech is ALWAYS an amazing summer of fun and discovery!

Summer camps take place at our science

and technology lab, SciTech Academy.

Location:

              SciTech Academy
at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Mission to Mars 6 to 9 years old July 15th-19th 8:30am to 12:00pm  $150

We’ll explore the physics and engineering involved in getting our egg-stronauts launched into space and help them land safely on Mars to begin the egg-sploration and colonization of Mars! Can we build a stomp rocket with the capacity to carry our supplies and get us there? But wait! Landing safely is just the beginning! What will we need to pack with us? What resources can we hope to find there? And how will we watch Game of Thrones? No matter what it takes to colonize a planet, wherever we go, science and engineering will lead the way!

SUMMER CAMPS

The Earth is Alive! 6-9 years old July 8th -12th 8:30am to 12:00pm  $150

In this camp we’ll look at key science points related to environmental stewardship and environmental engineering to create solutions that will protect the health of living organisms and improve the quality of the environment. This camp will focus on renewable energies and the engineering that goes into making sustainable living more practical. We’ll ask questions like “How are wind and solar power fueling our future?” and explore the difficulties of oil spills and come up with our own solutions through projects and experiments to gain understanding that the earth is not just a rock floating through space.

Mission to Space 10+ years old July 15th-19th 1:00pm to 4:30pm  $150

Stop Motion Animation 6 to 9 years old July 22nd-26th 8:30am to 12:00pm  $150

Stop motion animation has been used for close to 100 years, bringing some of our most loved stories to life - including 1933’s King Kong, 1964’s Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, the Gumby TV series of the 50’s, 60’s and 80’s, and of course, the LEGO Movie! Zu3D stop-motion animation software has been developed to give users of all ages the freedom to create amazing animated films quickly and easily. Stop motion is limitless in the materials that can be used to make a project. Students will learn all about this fun digital media format and how they can make amazing projects to tell their stories!

No camps July 1st-5th

Science Math and Robotic Technology Education (SMaRT Education), is a public 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Southern California. We are built on the forward-thinking investment approach that youth in our programs will be

the next inventors, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.

Jr Robotics 6-9 years old June 24th-28th  8:30am to 12:00 pm   $150

Jr Robotics begins with a “What is a Robot?” group discussion about what a robot is and isn’t and introduces students to fundamental concepts such as what is a directive and what is a programmer. Through robotics, students learn the fundamentals of engineering and computer programing. Students learn about Simple Machines (gears, levers, pulleys, etc…) and how they are used to help humans do everyday work. Students will build and program their robots to perform specific tasks and gain an understanding of the correlation between what they are doing on the computer and what is happening in the real world.

Crazy Contraptions 6-9 years old July 29th to August 2nd 8:30am to 12:00pm  $150

This camp is for the future engineer with a wild, creative side! Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and his crazy machines, then build one of their own! What is a Rube Goldberg Machine? A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device, or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion, generally including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg. (1883–1970).

Air Boat Maker Lab 10+ years old July 29th - August 2nd 1:00pm to 4:30pm  $150

Motor boat engineering is just like engineering - It’s easy. It’s like riding a bike, except you’re on fire, and the bike is on fire and so is everything else. We’ll use small motors to make air boats and help our armada sail the open seas! Or, at least across our kiddie pool. What makes the best hull? How will we mount our motors? What size should our propeller blades be?
PLEASE NOTE: Students will be working with hand tools and hot glue guns to build their boats. As with any project involving tools, safety precautions must be adhered to at all times to avoid injury and damage to property. If at any time a student is not behaving appropriately or is misusing tools and endangering others, they may be asked to leave the camp and NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN. Please consider this before registering for this camp.
